Our First Week at the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship in Heraklion, Greece – October – November 2024

The first week of the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship in Heraklion, Greece, has been exceptional! Over 1,300 athletes from 68 countries will compete over these two weeks, all striving for the top spot. We have done everything possible to support our athletes in their quest for medals. In total, more than 270 chiropractic treatments were provided during this intensive first week.

The first two days were relatively calm, focusing on pre-competition care. However, the following days brought a variety of treatments, including taping, Kinesio taping, and muscle care, particularly for the Ne-waza and Duo/Duo Show categories. Mechanical adjustments were also made to the Fighting System. Local medical teams on the mats were kept busy as well, dealing with a significant number of injuries, especially during the full contact day. We suspected several rib fractures, which were referred to the event’s medical teams.

Like in 2022 in Abu Dhabi, I requested, as Team Leader and with the consent of my colleagues, the establishment of a designated area in the warm-up zone for all paramedics and medical staff. We had the pleasure of sharing this space with the physiotherapists from the Belgian and Swiss teams, which provided a great opportunity to discuss the cases we encountered and our respective approaches.  It was a true privilege to have worked hand in hand with exceptionnel physiotherapists and doctors from all around the world.

Together, we had a single goal: to be there for our athletes. I had the pleasure of reuniting with Henrik from Sweden and welcoming two new members to the ChiroSport family: Angela from Los Angeles and Ricardo from Berlin. Welcome on board! Overall, the masters and seniors remembered the FICS chiropractors and were happy to see us again. We made sure to remind them to pass the message along to the young athletes’ coaches for the second week, so they can benefit from the excellent care provided by our colleagues.

Let’s stay connected as this adventure continues!
