After a FICS workshop at Murdoch University in Perth, student Corey Rogers described how direct access to experienced practitioners helped connect theory with practice.

“First of all, big thanks to Dr Isaksson and Dr Lourie for their time and for providing valuable insight into the world of sports chiropractic at no expense.”

I found the workshop informative and interesting. It was motivating to interact with chiropractors who are passionate about the profession, love what they do and are driven to achieve results with their patients.

I particularly enjoyed learning about pain science, kinematics and biomechanics when assessing an athlete in relation to their sport. Much of the content opened my thought process to the many factors that need to be considered when working with patients, rather than addressing only their pain.

At Murdoch, it can feel as though we learn much about how things work, but not always why or how to apply theory in practice. I would welcome further workshops about observing athletes, understanding what we are looking for and why it matters to treatment and outcomes.

Further workshops would help consolidate and apply the learning. Any opportunity to learn from experienced chiropractors would be a significant benefit to developing my knowledge and ability to treat the human body.

I know Dr Lourie plans on running fortnightly adjusting workshops at the Kelmscott clinic, which could provide an opportunity to apply what we learn in the weekend workshops. I also spoke with other Murdoch students who had not known about the workshop but were very interested, so future workshops could attract even more students and benefit the profession.
