February 18, 2020 – Internal Impingement of the Shoulder – By: Kellie K. Middleton, MD
Internal impingement (II) of the shoulder results from pathologic contact between the margin of the posterior glenoid and the posterior rotator cuff tendons on the articular surface of the glenohumeral joint. It typically affects overhead athletes, including pitchers, those engaged in racquet sports, swimmers, and volleyball players when the arm is in full external rotation and abduction of at least 90°.
